Scholastic Inc. - Horizon App
Effective December 21, 2016
The Horizon app features games and filtered chat that are synchronized with the Horizon website located at horizon.scholastic.com.
The only location-based information accessed or tracked via the app is the user’s zip code. We use that information for analytics purposes, to better understand app usage and performance.
Collection and Use
Registration: Registration is not required to use the app. To save game progress, however, a user must have a Scholastic kids online account. Users can log in with an existing account, or create a Scholastic kids account within the app or on www.scholastic.com/kids. To create an account, the user picks a user name from a list and creates a password. The user also provides an email address. The email address is used to send a one-time email to the user confirming registration. The user’s email address is then encrypted or “hashed” using one-way encryption so the email cannot be read. Scholastic uses the hashed email address only for account retrieval if the user forgets the password. The user name and password can be used on other kids’ sites operated by Scholastic Inc. such as Infinity Ring, The 39 Clues, TombQuest and any other Scholastic kids’ sites that indicate they accept these credentials.
Newsletters: Users can sign up for email newsletters within the app by submitting their email address and their parents’ email address. A parent’s email address is required so we can let the parent know the child has signed up, and unsubscribe if they wish. These email addresses are not combined with kids’ user names and passwords.
Chat: Live chat in the app is filtered to detect and remove personally identifiable information or objectionable content.
Purchasing: Buying and selling within the app is done with virtual currency for virtual goods. There is no in-app purchasing using real money. There are links out of the app to other free Scholastic apps in the app store.

Tracking Technologies and Ads
We use analytics software to measure traffic and usage trends and to help us better understand the functionality of our app on users’ devices. This software may record information such as how often your child uses the application, the events that occur within the app, aggregated usage, performance data, and where the app was downloaded from. We use this information only to administer, improve, monitor and analyze use of our service. We do not link the information we store in analytics software to any user log-ins or personal information.
Security is extremely important to us. We use industry standard encryption and security practices to preserve the integrity of our users’ data. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Scholastic is not responsible for the functionality or security measures of any third party. If you have questions about this feel free to contact us at email@example.com.
Users’ information collected through our service may be stored and processed in the United States or any other country in which we or our affiliates operate.
